About SHISEIDO
The history of Shiseido dates back to 1872. That year, 23-year-old Arinobu Fukuhara founded Japan's first Western-style pharmacy in the Ginza district of Tokyo, naming it Shiseido. The name originates from a passage in the ancient Chinese classic I Ching (The Book of Changes): Praise be to the great source of all things, from which all creation derives its being, celebrating the virtues of the earth and the continuous creation of new value from life.
In 1888, Shiseido launched Japan's first toothpaste, successfully transforming Western pharmaceutical knowledge into a mass-market consumer product. In 1897, Shiseido entered the cosmetics field with the release of a high-performance lotion called Eudermine. The launch of this product not only marked Shiseido's transformation into a cosmetics giant but also established its core philosophy of blending science with beauty.
Shiseido's success lies not only in its products but also in its unique aesthetic philosophy. In 1916, the founder's son, Shinzo Fukuhara, took over the company. He not only had a background as a pharmacist but was also a highly talented artist and photographer. He established a design department and created the iconic camellia flower logo. From that point on, Shiseido merged the understated aesthetics of the East with modern Western design, pioneering a visual system of packaging and advertising characterized by Art Deco influences. This distinctive Shiseido style profoundly influenced aesthetic trends in Asia and around the world.
Shiseido has consistently positioned itself as a science-based company. As early as 1916, the company established experimental gardens for product research and development. Starting in 1989, Shiseido founded a Skin Science Research Center in collaboration with top-tier institutions like Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital, delving deeply into the mysteries of life sciences.
This dedication to research has yielded countless classic products. Whether it's the revolutionary brightening ingredient 4MSK or the Ultimune essence designed to boost the skin's immune defense, Shiseido continuously translates cutting-edge dermatological research into tangible beauty experiences for consumers. Its product development adheres to a rigorous quality management system, ensuring both safety and exceptional efficacy.
Shiseido is one of the first beauty companies in Asia to achieve global expansion. Today, it operates in approximately 120 countries and regions worldwide, with a portfolio of over 40 brands including Clé de Peau Beauté, NARS, and Anessa.
Shiseido's connection with the Chinese market began in 1981, making it the first international cosmetics group to enter China. To better serve Chinese consumers, Shiseido not only introduced high-end brands but also localized deeply, creating brands like Aupres and Urara, developed specifically for the Chinese market.
